What is the Global Talent Stream?

The Global Talent Stream is part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), which offers temporary work permits to invite immigrants to Canada to meet certain labour needs. In the TFWP, GTS is the branch for highly skilled workers in specialized professions, giving priority to those with experience in engineering and technology fields.

In June 2017, the program was launched as a pilot for two years. Together with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) administers the program. Thousand of skilled foreign workers have arrived in Canada through the GTS since its introduction, with more expected in coming years.

A permanent part of Canadian immigration was announced in the 2019 Federal Budget by the government, giving Canadian businesses accelerated access to talented global candidates.

Do you know how the Global Talent Stream works? - Foreign Workers

Foreign worker needs to be aware that they cannot directly apply to the Global Talent Stream. To apply to the GTS, an employer must be a Canadian and the foreign worker(s) must also be listed. That means you must aim to get a GTS work permit from an employer who qualifies for the program if you wish to obtain one.

A Canadian employer can apply through two Global Talent Stream categories

Categorize A is an employer who is referred to GTS by a nominated GTS partner and is seeking to hire special and dedicated talent?
Category B pertains to employers looking to fill positions on the Global Talent Occupations List.

If you are a worker who hopes to find a job offer that qualifies for the GTS, you should determine whether your job falls within the definition of "unique and specialized talent", or whether your profession is on the list of Global Talent Occupations.

If you believe you meet the requirements for one of the GTS categories, your next step would be getting a job offer. Other than building a network of contacts, our experts can even assist you in searching for open positions. Canada even operates a Job Bank Database that can be used to locate positions related to the GTS.

Additionally, you cannot apply directly to the GTS, so once your employer offers you a job, he or she will need to submit an application containing your information. Upon successful completion of an employer's application, they will receive a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

In approximately 10 business days, this LMIA can be used to apply for a Canadian work permit.

Then, you'll be able to start your new job in Canada once you're approved for the work permit!

In spite of the fact that GTS leads to only a temporary work permit, the program is a great way to obtain permanent residence in Canada. One year of Canadian work experience is required by several Canadian immigration programs.

Canadian Experience and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams make up this category in Express Entry. A year of experience will likely put you in a good position to apply for Canadian Permanent Residency.

Over one million new immigrants are expected to arrive in Canada between 2020 and 2022. Around two-thirds of them will come from economic migration. Canada's current immigration system prioritizes highly skilled and experienced workers with Canadian experience for permanent residency, so joining GTS is a smart move for establishing one's career in Canada.
