Federal Skilled Worker Program  

 

The Canada Federal Skilled Worker program is for foreign nationals who have experience and skills to move to Canada as skilled workers. Canada differentiates skilled workers mainly based on their education, work experience, and language ability.

 

FSW is a program under the Express Entry Management System. Canada Express Entry uses the Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) to rank candidates on different selection factors.

 

To apply for a skilled worker visa in Canada, you must qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker program in Canada.

Eligibility Factors for the FSW Program

 

Each selection factor for FSW contains some conditions that help you make your profile stronger to receive an invitation to apply from Canada.  

 

1.  Work Experience

 

Minimum 12 months of continuous, full-time, paid, skilled work experience in the past 10 years or equivalent part-time paid work experience under NOC(National Occupational Classification) skill level, O, A & B.

(Volunteer or internship work experience may not be considered)

 

2.  Language proficiency report (English/French)

 

Language proficiency is crucial to be eligible for a Canadian PR. Achieve maximum CLB level in all reading, writing, listening, and speaking to receive the ITA. Get the language report from one of the internationally approved tests.

 

Canada accepts four language tests for Skilled Immigrants (Express Entry)- IELTS  and CELPIP for English and TCF and TEF for French.

 

3.   Educational Documents 

 

The applicants who have studied in Canada must have the education proof of a Canadian High School or Post-Secondary certificate, diploma, or degree. When you have studied outside of Canada,

 

Your education credentials must be evaluated (known as Education Credential Assessment) by an evaluation agency approved by CIC, and their report must confirm that your qualification is equally relevant to the standard of education in Canada. 

(ECA reports remain valid for up to 5 years)

 

4. Adaptability

 

Up to 10 points can be awarded to the applicants on the basis of their establishment in Canada. 

 

  1. Minimum of one year of previous work experience in Canada.
  2. At least two academic years of full-time study completed at a secondary or post-secondary educational institution in Canada.
  3. A spouse/common-law partner's past studies in Canada should include at least two academic years of full-time study in two academic departments.
  4. Work history of the accompanying spouse or common-law partner in Canada (minimum of one year of full-time work in Canada while on a valid work permit or with authorization to work).
  5. A relative of the principal applicant or spouse/common-law partner lives in Canada. An eligible relative must reside in Canada, be at least 18 years old, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  6. The language capability of the spouse or common-law partner (English and French language proficiency at a CLB 4 level or higher). This level is equivalent to IELTS 4.0 (For Writing, 4.5 for Listening, 3.5 for Reading, and 4.0 for Speaking).

 

Note: Full-time study is equivalent to at least 15 hours of class a week. It is important to maintain good academic standing during that time. 
Relatives must be a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, spouse's sibling/aunt or uncle, niece, or nephew.

 

5.  Age

 

Age is another major eligibility factor along with your language proficiency, work experience, and education. Applicants can get up to 12 points as per their age bar.

6.  Funds to Support

 

Candidates must have enough funds to support themselves and their dependents.

 

How does the federal skilled worker program work?

 

People who want to apply under the skilled worker program in Canada have to prove their eligibility through selection factors. Each factor holds points that results in an overall score out of 100.  

 

 67 is the minimum eligibility score. Having a score less than 67 makes you ineligible for the Federal Skilled Worker program.

 

Education, Language, and work experience are three high-scoring factors in the selection grid of FSW. With your degree & additional diplomas, good language skills, and relevant experience you can gain a good passing score for FSW.

 

Steps to apply under the FSW program:

 

  1. Find NOC Code for your Work Profile
  2. Gather Documents- IELTS report and ECA
  3. Create an Express Entry profile
  4. Get CRS Score 
    (If you score the same or above the Express Entry CRS cut-off, you will receive an Invitation to apply from Canada pr visa
  5. On receiving ITA, submit documents  
    (You get 60 days for document submission)
  6. On successful submission of your documents, the applicant receives an AOR(Acknowledgement of Receipt). 
  7. Once your documents are verified and the PR application is finalized, you will receive a Passport Request Form(PPR).
  8. Receive COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence) letter 

 

Processing time of FSW application

 

The standard time for the complete process is six months. From application received to the issuance of PR by the Canadian authorities. 

 

Where can you migrate to Canada as a Skilled worker?

 

The Skilled Worker program in Canada is a Federal program. As a skilled program qualifier, you can migrate to any province of Canada except Quebec. Quebec has its selection procedure to choose candidates for the province.
